Message From Arizona State Treasurer
Greetings Biltmore Area Partnership Members,
I extend warm greetings from the Arizona State Treasury as we look forward to cooler temperatures and the changing seasons.
One of my priorities as State Treasurer is financial literacy because every Arizonan should have the knowledge and skills to wisely manage their money which is the cornerstone of a prosperous and thriving Arizona. Last week, I was pleased to honor three outstanding Arizona teachers who are advancing financial literacy in their classrooms and received the first-ever Arizona Award for Excellence in Teaching Financial Literacy. This program is a new partnership between my Office and the University of Arizona’s Center for the Philosophy of Freedom.
During an awards ceremony at the State Capitol, we recognized Claudia Brown-Morgan from Aguila Elementary School, Gisell Astrid Romero from Douglas High School and Jim Welty from Brophy College Preparatory. I was pleased to be joined by Dr. Mary L. Rigdon, Freedom Center Director and Dr. Saura Masconale, Freedom Center Associate Director.
Each of the three teachers received a full scholarship to the Master of Legal Studies in Law and Economics degree and additional gift items including school supplies for their classrooms. I am so thankful for this partnership to recognize outstanding teachers and give them new skills to advance their careers. Congratulations to our honorees!
This past month, I also had the privilege of visiting the Queen Creek Chamber of Commerce Women in Business breakfast. I shared how my Office is continuing to securely invest nearly $64.7 billion in taxpayer dollars each year and how our investment team is growing our assets to over $3 billion since I took office in January 2019.
I additionally traveled to schools in Tucson, Chandler and Phoenix to encourage 5th and 6th grade students to write about their dream careers and enter the AZ529 Essay Writing Contest. Our team of judges will select 20 winners from across the state representing each Arizona county and each type of school including district, charter, private, homeschool and tribal schools. I will announce the winners during an awards ceremony at the State Capitol in October.
I am thankful for your continued support and contributions to our community. If you or your organization require my Office’s assistance, please do not hesitate to contact us at (602) 542-7800 or aztreasury.gov/contact.
Sincerely,
Arizona Treasurer Kimberly Yee
Message from Councilman Kevin Robinson
I am excited to inform the Arizona Biltmore Area Partnership that on September 6th at the Phoenix City Council meeting, the city council voted yes on a text amendment to allow single-family homes to build accessory dwelling units (ADU) on their properties. This vote was made to increase housing supply on existing lots. ADU’s will give homeowners many options when it comes to the use of their property, including providing onsite care to older relatives and creating a housing market for young adults who are early in their careers. Phoenix is growing, and we want to ensure that all residents have an opportunity to benefit from the developments in our city. ADU’s will help people live closer the amenities that make Phoenix so great. Achieving success with this text amendment was a group effort, including input from the Neighborhood Coalition of Greater Phoenix (NCGP). The City of Phoenix Planning and Development department worked incredibly hard to find language that made neighbors comfortable. Residents have had worries about short term rentals in their neighborhoods and it became a priority to address these concerns. We were able to define ADU’s in a clear fashion that dictated a minimum of 30 days for rentals. The goal of this text amendment was always to enrich our neighborhoods and communities and I feel good about what we were able to accomplish here. I am excited about Phoenix’s approach towards increasing the housing supply, while bringing cost down for residents and protecting neighborhoods from short-term rentals.
Thank you, Councilman Kevin Robinson
