🧡 February: Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month

February was Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month (TDVAM), a crucial time to educate, support, and take action against the growing issue of teen dating violence. This month serves as a reminder of the importance of fostering healthy relationships, recognizing warning signs of abuse, and empowering young people to break the cycle of violence.

📊 Understanding the Reality

Teen dating violence is more common than many realize. Studies show that:
🔸 1 in 10 teens will experience physical dating violence.
🔸 About 10% of adolescents report being physically harmed by an intimate partner within the past year.
🔸 Girls are particularly vulnerable, facing a higher risk of long-term behavioral and health consequences due to abusive relationships.
🔸 Witnessing or experiencing dating violence can lead to unhealthy relationship patterns that carry into adulthood, perpetuating cycles of abuse.

⚠️ Recognizing the Warning Signs

Teen dating violence can take many forms, including:
✔ Physical abuse – Hitting, slapping, shoving, or any form of physical harm.
✔ Emotional abuse – Manipulation, humiliation, constant criticism, or controlling behavior.
✔ Digital abuse – Excessive monitoring through texts, social media harassment, or threats via technology.
✔ Sexual abuse – Pressuring or forcing unwanted physical contact or sexual activity.

Young people may not always recognize the red flags of an unhealthy relationship. That’s why early intervention and education are critical.

💡 How You Can Help

We all have a role to play in breaking the cycle of abuse and promoting healthy relationships. Here’s how you can make a difference:

💬 Start Conversations – Talk to teens about respect, boundaries, and warning signs of unhealthy behavior.
📚 Educate & Spread Awareness – Share resources on dating violence prevention in schools, families, and communities.
📺 Challenge Media Portrayals – Speak out against the glamorization of toxic relationships in movies, TV shows, and social media.
🤝 Support Victims & Survivors – If someone you know is in an abusive relationship, listen without judgment and help connect them with resources.

I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to the National Forum for Black Public Administrators (NFBPA) for an incredible Black History Month kickoff event. This celebration was a powerful reminder of the strength, perseverance, and brilliance of the Black community, setting the tone for a month of reflection, learning, and honoring the remarkable contributions of Black individuals throughout history.

Black History Month is a vital time to:
✔ Acknowledge the profound impact of Black individuals in shaping culture, society, and history.

Proposed Legislation: HB 2371/SB 1229 – Home Design Restrictions

A new legislative proposal, HB 2371/SB 1229 (Biasiucci/Bolick), could significantly alter home design and planning in Arizona. The bill proposes drastic changes to lot sizes, setbacks, and community design standards, raising concerns among local officials and residents.

Key Provisions of HB 2371/SB 1229

• Higher Housing Density: For new subdivisions over 5 acres, the bill prohibits lot sizes greater than 1,500 square feet, allowing up to 24 homes per acre.
• Reduced Setbacks: The legislation limits setbacks to 5 feet on the sides and 10 feet at the front and back, significantly reducing open space in neighborhoods.
• Smaller Home Requirements: On a 30’ x 50’ (1,500 sq. ft.) lot, builders could construct either:
  • A 600-square-foot single-story home
  • A 1,200-square-foot two-story home
  • This could fundamentally alter the character and livability of single-family neighborhoods.

Concerns About the Bill

🚨 Eliminates Community Standards:
The bill removes design standards, sidewalks, and open spaces, negatively impacting livability, walkability, and overall quality of life.

🔥 Increased Fire Risks:
Firefighters oppose the bill, citing dangerously close proximity between homes. The lack of spacing could make fire rescues nearly impossible and increase fire spread risks to neighboring properties.

🚧 Misinformation About City Regulations:
Proponents of the bill claim that cities have banned small homes on small lots, but the City of Phoenix already allows flexibility, including:
✔ No size restrictions on homes
✔ Development options in all single-family districts
✔ Carport-friendly home options

Why This Matters

While the bill aims to increase housing affordability, it does so at the cost of community safety, neighborhood integrity, and long-term city planning. The City of Phoenix continues to regulate density responsibly, ensuring that growth is sustainable and supports essential infrastructure like water and public services.
