Human Trafficking Awareness Month
January is a time to raise awareness about the global issue of human trafficking and the exploitation of vulnerable individuals.
This month serves as a reminder to educate communities, support survivors, and take action against this crime. It highlights the need for stronger policies, prevention efforts, and resources to combat trafficking and protect those affected.
Human trafficking involves force, fraud, or coercion to obtain labor or commercial sex acts. Any minor under 18 who is induced to perform commercial sex acts is considered a victim of human trafficking. In Arizona, the average age of youth trafficked is 15 years old.
The Mayor’s Human Trafficking Task Force created The Compass Plan to address and combat human trafficking through a comprehensive approach focused on law enforcement, victim services, training, awareness, and outreach.

Together, we can work towards a world where human trafficking no longer exists.
Arizona Firefighters Assist in California Wildfires
Arizona firefighters have been working tirelessly to help manage the Eaton Fire in Altadena, California. The fire has caused significant challenges, and crews are on the ground battling the flames to protect lives and property.
The Arizona Department of Forestry and Fire Management deployed 100 personnel to Southern California to assist in combating the wildfires that erupted on January 7th. In addition to Central Arizona Fire, another Arizona agency was sent to Altadena, while two more were positioned in the Cleveland and San Bernardino National Forests.
Central Arizona Fire arrived in Altadena on Wednesday morning, bringing five trucks and a water tank to conduct tactical patrols and prevent flare-ups. Their efforts are crucial in containing the fire and preventing further destruction.
I want to express my deepest gratitude to the brave firefighters from Arizona, across the nation, and even neighboring countries who are risking their lives to protect communities. Your dedication and sacrifice do not go unnoticed.
To the victims of the Eaton Fire in Altadena, my thoughts are with you during this difficult time. As you begin the recovery process, know that you are not alone—we stand with you and support you through this challenging journey.
Staying Warm: Furnace vs. Heater
A furnace is a heating system that uses gas, oil, or electricity to heat the air, typically warming the entire home. A heater, on the other hand, is a device designed to heat specific areas rather than the whole house.
Troubleshooting a Broken Furnace
If you suspect your furnace isn’t working, follow these steps:
- Check the thermostat – Ensure it’s set to the right temperature and that the batteries are functioning.
- Verify the power source – Make sure the furnace is receiving power.
- Check the fuel supply – If your furnace runs on gas or oil, confirm that there’s enough fuel in the tank.
- Call an HVAC technician – If none of the above steps resolve the issue, a professional can diagnose and fix the problem.
Staying Warm Without a Furnace or Heater
If you don’t have a working heating system, here are some ways to stay warm:
- Keep curtains and blinds closed to help retain heat.
- Layer up with extra blankets and warm clothing.
- Have an emergency heating plan in case of prolonged cold.
- Use a space heater if available.
- Consider a backup heat source such as a fireplace or portable propane heater (with proper ventilation).
Staying prepared and knowing alternative ways to keep warm can make a big difference during cold weather.

Message From Arizona State Treasurer Kimberly Yee
Dear Biltmore Area Partnership Members,
I am proud to share that under my leadership, the Arizona State Treasurer’s Office continues to achieve historic records in investment performance and assets under management, as well as in earnings distributed to schools, state agencies, and local governments.
When I took office as State Treasurer in January 2019, Arizona’s assets stood at $15.4 billion. Today, those assets have more than doubled, increasing by 105% to over $31.6 billion.
Record-High Investment Earnings in Fiscal Year 2024
This year alone, our office has distributed a record $1.57 billion in investment earnings, including:
- $456.1 million to the Permanent Land Endowment Trust Fund (PLETF) beneficiaries
- $783.1 million to State Agencies
- $335.9 million to Local Government Investment Pool (LGIP) clients
I continue traveling across Arizona to meet with LGIP clients and keep them informed on how we are wisely managing and growing their local dollars, benefiting families across the state.
Historic Growth of PLETF & LGIP
Both the PLETF and LGIP have reached record highs in assets under management (AUM) at the end of 2024:
- LGIP hit $7.8 billion, increasing 140% since I took office.
- PLETF reached $9.35 billion, up 62% under my administration.
This means more funding for our 13 beneficiaries, including K-12 education, which alone will receive $447.9 million this fiscal year.
I am grateful for the hard work of my investment team, ensuring these earnings come from investment returns alone, helping to reduce the tax burden across Arizona.

We are inviting all Arizona K-6th grade students to envision their future careers through artwork! The AZ529 My Future Career Art Contest encourages students to draw, paint, or creatively depict their dream jobs.
🏆 15 winners (one from each county) will each receive $529 toward a new or existing AZ529 Education Savings account.
