Message From Councilman Kevin Robinson

Electric Bike/Electric Scooter Safety

A recent Electric Scooter accident has brought to light an ongoing issue we have regarding Electric Bikes and Electric Scooters.

I encourage parents to have in-depth conversations with their kids who ride these bikes and scooters. These conversations need to express the necessary safety measures that need to be taken as well as the importance of paying attention to traffic.

  1. Always Wear a Helmet – Helmets significantly reduce the risk of head injuries in case of falls or accidents
  2. Stay Alert – Staying alert allows riders to remain fully aware of other riders, vehicles, and obstacles
  3. Obey Traffic Signals – Adhering to signals allows others sharing the roads/paths to be more predictable, reducing the likelihood of accidents
  4. Ride in Designated Areas – Using designated areas promotes safe riding practices and allows space away from vehicles
  5. Ensure Safety Equipment Is Intact – Regular checks limit the likelihood of malfunctions that may lead to accidents
  6. Know Your Limits – Understanding personal riding skills helps prevent risky maneuvers that could lead to accidents
  7. Always Ride with Both Hands – Keeping both hands on the handlebars provides better control, especially during turns or when navigating obstacles.

Grass Incentive

Phoenix Water Services has launched a new program offering financial assistance to homeowners who replace their lawns with water-efficient, desert-adapted landscapes. The initiative encourages residents to reduce outdoor water use by receiving $2 per square foot for removing grass. This effort not only conserves water but could also help residents save money on their water bills. It’s part of the City’s broader commitment to sustainable urban living in a desert climate. Key highlights include:

  • Receive $2 per square foot for removing at least 250 square feet of grass.
  • Grass must be alive and healthy at a minimum of 75% density of the area to be removed.
  • Access to educational workshops for landscape design assistance.
  • Applications are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.

For more information please visit, https://www.phoenix.gov/waterservicessite/Pages/Residential-Grass-Incentives.aspx

VITA Volunteers

The City needs volunteers to help residents with their 2024 taxes. Each year, the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program prepares free tax returns for low-to-moderate-income individuals and families, but we can’t do it without YOU. FREE certified training is provided for basic tax prep assistance. We also need greeters, screeners, bilingual interpreters and site coordinators. Learn more at Phoenix.gov/TaxHelp Statement regarding bulk trash complaints.

Over the past few weeks, we’ve received several concerns regarding the recent changes to the city’s bulk trash pickup process. As you may know, the bulk trash collection schedule has shifted from the previous four-times-a-year pickups. This adjustment was made in response to a thorough evaluation conducted by the Public Works Department, which concluded that a scheduled process would provide greater efficiency and reliability for residents.

While we understand that the transition may be frustrating, the decision to implement a scheduled system is designed to save both time and resources. The scheduled pickups allow for better planning of collection routes and reducing the wear and tear on the city’s vehicles. Additionally, this program will allow residents to set bulk trash pickup on a schedule that is most convenient for their needs. We envision these changes leading to limited illegal dumping in our alleys and on our streets.

Both Public Works and our office are aware of the current issues with scheduling under the new program. We are committed to improving in the following ways:

  1. Larger scheduling windows available starting in 2025.
  2. Additional time slots available for 2024.
  3. Customer Service Improvements.

We appreciate your understanding as the city continues to monitor and refine the program. We welcome any further feedback you may have.

Thank you,
Kevin Robinson
City of Phoenix Councilman, District 6

Message From Arizona State Treasurer

Give the Gift of Education with an AZ529 Savings Plan this Holiday Season

Hello Biltmore Area Partnership Members,

I extend warm holiday greetings from the Arizona State Treasury! Every child deserves the best education that positions them for success in life. As a mother, I understand the importance of paving a pathway for our children to experience a future with boundless opportunities. That’s why, as Arizona’s State Treasurer, I’m expanding opportunities for all Arizona families to access higher education, from traditional college to vocational training and apprenticeship programs.

What is the AZ529 Education Savings Plan? The AZ529 Plan is a tax-deferred investment plan designed to help families save for their children’s or grandchildren’s future education expenses. Savings in an AZ529 plan are free from federal income tax, and withdrawals remain tax-free when used for qualified education expenses. Contributions to an AZ529 Plan can be deducted from your Arizona state income taxes of up to $4,000 per beneficiary for a married couple filing jointly or up to $2,000 per beneficiary for single filers. There’s no limit on the number of beneficiaries for your tax deductions.

How can the funds be used? AZ529 savings can be used to pay for a variety of higher education expenses, including tuition, fees, room, board, books, supplies and even internet access. AZ529 funds may be used at accredited public and private colleges, universities, community colleges, technical training schools and apprenticeship programs. Additionally, AZ529 savings can even be used on school tuition for private and religious K-12 educational institutions.

What if the child doesn’t go to college or use all their 529 money? There is good news! Beginning this year, families now have the option of transferring qualified “leftover” 529 funds, up to $35,000, into the account beneficiary’s Roth IRA retirement funds, free of any tax, penalty or applicable income limits.

Who can participate? Anyone can contribute to an AZ529 Account and receive the tax benefits for their contributions! Parents can save for their children. Grandparents can save for their grandchildren. Aunts and uncles can save for their nieces and nephews. Friends can save for their friends. You can even open your own AZ529 Plan and save for yourself!

With the holiday season quickly approaching, consider giving your loved ones the gift of saving for their future education by contributing to their AZ529 Education Savings Plan. Contributions from parents, grandparents, relatives and family friends provide gifts with long-term meaning for their youngest loved ones to help them save for their future education. However, if giving children a card that says, “I helped you save for college,” seems less than magical, I have 4 suggestions that will get them excited about their future education.

  1. Inspire them with a career costume.
Give your little one a chef’s hat, astronaut costume, or other career dress-up option with a note saying you believe they can be whatever they desire in the future, and that you have contributed to their AZ529 Plan to help them achieve their future dreams.
  2. Help them learn more about different careers.
Find a book about a future career that they might find interesting about a “Dream Job” and then give them the book with a bookmark that says you have contributed to an AZ529 Plan to support their future dream career.
  3. Experience The Future
Take children to a museum or activity that helps inspire a future career, or purchase a season pass to the Science Center, Natural History Museum, Musical Instrument Museum, or other destination. Children are full of passions waiting to be discovered! When they see the endless possibilities of what they can accomplish in the future, let them know that you have contributed to their AZ529 account.
  4. Split it 50/50.
If a physical toy or gift to unwrap is a requirement, you can split the cost of what you normally budget for the entire present and take half the funds to spend on the physical gift item while contributing the other half of that amount to donate to the child’s AZ529 account. As we enter this holiday season, I extend my sincere wishes for a special and joyous time shared with your loved ones. Investing in a child’s education is a unique and meaningful gift that will go a long way. The smart financial choices and planning you do now for your child’s or grandchild’s future can ensure that they will experience the education they desire while securing the financial freedom they deserve.

As always, if you or your organization require my Office’s assistance, please do not hesitate to contact us at (602) 542-7800 or aztreasury.gov/contact.

Message from Camelback High School

Greeting from Camelback High School!

We are so fortunate to have partners like the leaders in BAP who are helping us feed our families this Holiday season.  I wanted to provide some data for context.  Camelback High School serves a population where 90% of our students qualify for free and reduced lunch which for a family of four would be an annual income of less than $39,000.  Within that population, we have over 35 students who qualify as homeless and we are often the first and main resource to provide food and clothing. This Holiday season it is our goal to provide full meals for over 100 families in addition to the normal food boxes that we provide.  Your donations, support, and generosity are always appreciated!  Below is a flyer that we shared with our staff and if you can provide any donations it would be very much appreciated!
